is the romney/ryan ticket is not credible on the issue of the war that we are fighting. >> no, they're not. >> we have 68,000 people right now, paul ryan embarrassed himself on afghanistan tonight in a way he embarrassed himself on no other issue. he did not understand the question well enough to know that he was making a mistake because he's just learned this for the test. he doesn't understand any of it. i find it terrifying. >> i think that he absolutely blew it in terms of afghanistan. i think even when he said marines in benghazi, when marines are at embassies. and, i mean, he also bent the truth. he's not at the level of liar as romney. he's a fibber. growing to be a liar. romney's an accomplished liar. but i think that clearly mr. biden gave facts. there was nothing they could refute. and i think he was fiery and to the point. i think ryan held his right wing position. he did not do the chameleon thing that romney did. >> that's true. >> i think it will hurt him in the end and hurt romney in the end and i think when it came especially to foreign affairs, it's good it was in a colleg
the romney-ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> woodruff: the vice president, in turn, charged it was ryan who was stretching the truth. >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. in fact... >> and why is that so? >> because not a single thing he said is accurate. first of all... >> be specific. >> i will be very specific. number one, the... this lecture on embassy security-- the congressman here cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for, number one. so much for the embassy security piece. >> woodruff: today, romney and other republicans pounced on the biden remarks. >> there were more questions that came out of last night because the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he... he's doubling down on denial. >> woodruff: but at the white house, presidential press secretary jay carney said the vice president was correct in what he said. >> he was speaking directly for himself and for the president. he meant the white house and as is, of course, appropriate, these kinds of issues are handl
was mitt romney. he picked paul ryan for a simple reason and the same reason he went to the olympics. he wanted to. he runs his campaign. he is the ceo of the campaign. he is his own karl rove. it has cost him a lot of problems. he is the product, not the ceo. that is how he set it up. they feel good about the ryan choice now. they gave republicans excitement. they needed it. if it costs them problems or florida, then it is a gap. >> i would do it differently. romney had had a bad summer. he had had a bad trip to europe. he came back. there was a discomfort in terms of where the campaign was and where they were headed. he wanted to shake things up. he did not think this was the time for a safe choice. there were two groups of people that were excited about the pick of paul ryan. hwang was conservative republicans and the others were congressional democrats. we could finally make the ryan plan a big deal. it did not end up being a positive or negative. it moved romney's numbers of about 2 points up and then dissipated. it closed things up in wisconsin and settle down. it has been fairly n
. today the shoe is on the other food for obama/biden and romney/ryan. last week it was the president's team facing high expectations. this week it is paul ryan who is expected to perform well. last week the stakes were monumental for the romney team who desperately needed a strong performance to overcome weeks of mistakes, bad polls and republican hand wringing. this week it is team obama facing high stakes to stop the bleeding and quiet the lamenting of freaked out democrats who were disappointed with last week's apathetic performance. the stylistic shoe may be on the other foot as well. ryan like obama can come across as cerebral and distant. one last thing, while the pressure is on for biden, a lot is at stake for ryan too. while he is well known by inside the belt way crowd, the national audience is just getting to know ryan. his unnecessary bending of the truth sullied his reputation. this is take two for ryan to make a favorable impression and to preserve his own future regardless of whether the romney ryan ticket. this is happening in kentucky, a state known for derby, bourbon
you've seen, and the polls show it, the romney/ryan ticket has momentum. the polls have tightened in recent days following mitt romney's performance, where he obviously won that debate. there's a lot more attention here. if joe biden is able to perform very well -- and he's a pretty good debater. if he's able to perform pretty well perhaps he can stem some of that momentum, at least dampen a little criticism heading into the debate next week in new york, buy the president a little time. if paul ryan clearly dominates in this debate it will be seen very much as a one-two punch and that will just mean more momentum. >> they've been, as we call it in college, cramming. how have both of them been preparing? >> reporter: yeah. it is like cramming. i think it's sort of like going back, studying for -- one aide told me it's like studying for the s.a.t.s in the middle of a campaign. they go over a lot of briefing materials. they're brushing up on domestic and foreign policy, getting to certainly know each other's positions on everything. there's a lot of sort of time spent aalone where th
the ryan plan, you will notice, laura. is he talking about the romney plan. is he talking about the romney tax plan. the romney budget. and making it very clear for the first time and i thought he did a great job of it, talking about who is the boss and the boss is governor romney. >> laura: all right, lou, great to see you. have a great weekend. >> you too. >> laura: when we come right back, martha raddatz questions the can cats on abortion. -- raddatz on abortion. we will hear from both sides coming up. >> laura: thanks for staying with us, i'm laura ingraham in for bill o'reilly. in the unresolved problem segment tonight, just when we thought the so-called war on women debate was over, last night's moderator martha raddatz might have reignited an issue with a question about abortion and faith. >> i don't see how a person can separate their public life from their private life or from their faith. our faith informs us in everything we do. my nate informs me about how to take care of the vulnerable about how to make sure that people have a chance in life. now, you weren't asked why i'm pro
politics. in wisconsin that is where paul ryan is from, mitt romney's running mate. that is only a 2-point race in wisconsin. you have to remember, this is state where back in june there was recall election against scott walker. he won the race. he demoralized the democrats. a lot of activists were saying because president obama didn't come strong in favor of the democratic candidate, it demoralized a lot of democrats there. turnout could be very important. if the democratic turnout is not high, you might see mitt romney win that state. >> patti ann: meanwhile, florida where he is romney is enjoying a 2% advantage. we have david plouffe saying, we are going to get the senior citizens and hispanics. we are going to get florida? >> it's a crucial state for romney to win, one of two of most crucial states, florida and ohio. there is another poll out, tampa bay times poll that shows romney is up by 7. obama campaign disputes the poll that the hispanic voters are not as close as that poll shows. that is pretty significant lead in florida with rom up 7. he certainly as the momentum. that would b

need to start. governor romney and congressman ryan want to see what we have today and how we can build upon that. especially so that we are not taxing the american people more than we already are. the fact that the supreme court saw obamacare as a tax is an issue for me as it is for most republicans. i would like to see people work together to create a solution where people have health care. governor romney has never said he does not want every american to have health care. it wants a good solution. he does not want to do anything until he has found the right way to do it. he does not want to have to do something three years down the road to repair its. >> where will you watch tonight? >> are campaign headquarters are just a few steps away. we are going to watch on tv. we will be cheering and shouting and discussing the debate as it is going on. i think i will be with my team. >> that is the advantage, you actually get to share our make noise or clap while the people there cannot do that. thank you very much for spending time with c-span. we appreciate it. >> thank you so much. >> benj
, comparing with that of romney and ryan. steve. >> so romney and ryan do have somewhat different plans. we talked a lot in the debate last week about taxes. this is the spending side of the equation. to kind of lay out apropos conversations we had earlier in the show about what ryan and romney each believe about spending, let's start with kind of an overview of where the three people would like to bring spending over the next ten years. the 20-year historical average is at about 21%,ed red line that you see across there. obama would like to have spending end up at 23%. romney and ryan both want it down at 20%. so there's a clear difference, and they all agree on where it should go. what gets interesting is as you dig into the detail of what gets cut, and you'll see some very, i think, fascinating differences among these guys. so on social security, as you heard president obama say in the last debate, the three guys are actually in the same place. they want to spend the same amount on social security in the next ten years. when you get to medicare, romney and ryan are in the same place, but
showdown only days away. new poll numbers show governor romney with a post-debate bump. paul ryan getting ready for the faceoff against joe biden in the next big debate. i'm bill hemmer here. martha has the day off. >> i'm patti ann browne in for mart maing that -- martha maccallum. a veteran political strategist says joe biden will be going for the throat. >> they will be pouring cola down his throat. they will react. because they will have a couple days of bad polling. ryan has very impressive but hasn't done this before. biden who is high-wire act in attack mode which is not always his normal place. bill: joe cola. fox news contributor, good morning to you. >> good morning, bill. bill: you believe this is huge opportunity for romney-ryan, why? >> it is. romney set the stage for the dominant victory over the president in the first presidential debate. that changed the story of the whole campaign. if you have ryan defeating the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republic
believe this is huge opportunity for romney-ryan, why? >> it is. romney set the stage for the dominant victory over the president in the first presidential debate. that changed the story of the whole campaign. if you have ryan defeating the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republican strategist on "meet the press" sunday morning, democrats could be desperate. do you agree with that? >> they're certainly very worried. the degree of concern they had over the president's performance in denver is much deeper than we even thought. they're very, very worried about that. they're looking for joe biden to come out and deliver a lot of zingers and attack lines that barack obama didn't. this is the second chance in the presidential debate. there is not another actual presidential debate until october 16th. bill: listen how paul ryan explains how he sees vice president joe biden. >> he is fast on the cuff. he is a witty guy. he knows who he is and been doing this for 40 years. s
and most of those stops have been this year, mitt romney and paul ryan are there again this weekend as john shows us it is the battleground of the battleground states. and ohio's working moms could be the key to victory. >> the lights still on past midnight. another 20-hour day for jessica. >> i'm a single mom of a 5-year-old little girl who is fantastic. i work full time. and go to school full time. so my day usually starts around 4:45 in the morning, and ends close to 1:00 a.m. you do what you have to do in this economy. >> her vote, she said, is for jillian's future. she was leaning mitt romney until his own words pushed her back to undecided. >> about the 47%, and i can't worry about them. how can you put your faith and trust in a candidate that doesn't care about everybody? >> to win ohio and other key battlegrounds, romney must overcome the doubts of working moms like jessica. new cnn polling shows a post-debate romney bounce but still a narrow obama lead. white women are the battle within the battleground. 52% support the president now. that's up from the 47% he received here in 2008
attempt to balance the budget. and what ryan and romney are calling is outrageously stupid. what the president is doing is inadequate. >> okay. al? >> good description. nothing partisan about that description. you know, al, the governor brings up a point. i'm not sure that i agree with how he describes the two sides, but i will say that when joe biden -- let's just take these two issues right here. to talk about the stupidity of this campaign. joe biden won't even talk about raising entitlement -- your date of eligibility for entitlements one year despite the fact when fdr set the life expectancy at 62, we're now up, 79, 80, something like that. and you've got three people working for every one person getting these entitlements. and then on the republican side, this $5 trillion tax cut, the numbers don't add up. it doesn't matter what you do. the numbers don't add up. nor does the administration's belief that if you just tax rich guys, you're going to take care of the deficit. it's just -- it's nonsense. >> joe, you're absolutely right. neither side is seriously addressing this.
presidential debate a few days away, mitt romney will be preparing but not until after he and paul ryan stop in keystone state of ohio. and paul ryan will be in youngstown and both are hoping to capitalize from the momentum of the first presidential debate. speaking of momentum and check out the new cnn poll of polls, and you can see that mitt romney has a two-point lead over president obama this the national poll, but as far as in ohio where the president holds a three-point lead there now. >> 12 miles, 2 days at 2 miles per hour, and that pretty much sums up the space shuttle "endeavour's" final journey. it is inching along through the street s of los angeles to its home at the california science center. once there, it will go on display on october 30th. >>> h shocking allegations for a zumba instructor who is accused of running a prostitution ring in kennebunk, maine. they say that alexis wright had sek with dozens of men with her business partner, and she faces hundreds of counts of prostitution charges and both wright and her business partner have pleaded not guilty. >>> michael bloombe
to want to really frame a negative message against romney and ryan, and pick up where the president didn't do that well last week, or didn't mention at all, thinking of issues like the auto ballot, social security, the ryan proposal on that. the medicare issue, the 47% comment that romney made and people were stunned that obama didn't mention that last week. and, of course, romney's income taxes and how he made his money at bain consulting. those are all issues i think we will hear from joe biden on. and it is very different than what biden's pass was four years ago, steve, as you recall facing sarah palin. the biggest challenge been for biden was don't patronize sarah palin, don't bully sarah palin certainly, try to a quarter to a certain degree of respect. i think this is a different time, and paul ryan is a different opponent. >> there's been what some are calling the rebuttal as both congressman paul ryan, republican vice president to nominate and vice president biden try to set expectations for the debate on thursday. let me share with you will paul ryan said on the fox news channel
it's about medicare and that it's a voucher program, that mr. romney and mr. ryan, their health care plan will lead to many uninsured and put people back out. preexisting conditions. >> let me just step back just a minute here about your defense of the president's performance. what is your theory? i mean, it was widely panned, and the thing is if he thought as he said the next day that mitt romney isn't telling the truth, that mitt romney is remaking himself, xwr wouldn't he say that on the stage? what went wrong there? >> not in president obama's mind. i was in denver. i was in that audience. you know, as a debater, of course, i've never run for president, but have you to decide do you want to spend all yourime all night long refuting someone's lies about your record or even about your own, and mitt romney is a guy -- i have never seen this before. he has been on two different sides of his own plan, which, of course, he won't explain, so he can have multiple positions about something that doesn't exist. i think the president wanted to get across his points. he had facts. mr. romney
that ryan has to keep the momentum going from what was widely seen as a mitt romney win in denver? >> we had a good week last week. there's no doubt about it. we have to have a good week this week and the week after, and i think we take it one day at a time. you know, i don't know, i think that the vp debates are very important. you saw in our presidential primary season, candy. we had, what, 22 debates, and at every one of these debates, whether it was on cnn or fox or whatever the station, we had broken records for a primary debate. people enjoy these debates. i would expect a lot of people to be watching. i think paul is going to do a great job, but i also think that joe biden is incredibly gifted when it comes to debating and understanding policy. he is a good orator. >> let me ask you about a colorado poll that came out -- university of denver poll that came out right after the debates, and it showed that colorado is certainly a swing state. kind of shrinking. the lead of barack obama 47%. mitt romney, 43%. i want you to focus on this. someone else 4%. how worried about the fact that ga

of time in the buckeye state. that's perhaps why we saw governor romney and paul ryan reuniting last night in lancaster, ohio. big crowd down there, about 8,500 jammed into the town square. but there is some ground to be made up for this campaign. polls show that president obama is still holding a lead over governor romney in ohio. but those polls also show that the governor is closing in, within striking distance now of the president. speaking of the president, he also was in ohio this week and admitted publicly that he had a bad night out in denver for that first presidential debate. obviously a lot of republicans and democrats agreed with his assessment. the president said he was too polite and that voters can expect him to see him being a lot more active in the second debate up at hofstra university in new york. back here in ohio, paul ryan's got a big day here. he's got two stops in ohio, starting with this rally a little later this morning, and then he'll go up to minnesota before ending the night in wisconsin. he's expected to take sunday off the trail, little rest for the weary, if
see some of that, romney has a speech on monday on foreign policy and i think that ryan could follow-up on some of those themes. >> okay, jake? >> i absolutely agree. i think it's libya, we've got congressional hearings coming out next week, the governor has a speech at the virginia military institute on monday and i think there's going to be a lot of foreign policy and a lot of things that come out between now and the debate on libya and the coverup and what's been going on there. >> okay, alice? >> i agree. while the economy is the ryan's strength i think that foreign policy is going to take center space during the the speech on monday, but it's critical he's able to point out the fact that the obama administration believes that strength is a vulnerability as opposed to weakness. i think that he needs to point that out and that we can achieve peace through strength and everything that's happened after libya as a result, the inability to come to truth. this was a terror attack and those are things that ryan needs to highlight and that's going to resonate with the people. >> it's goi
